Scapular upward rotation (or scapular superior rotation) is a rotary movement of the scapula – moving the inferior (lower) angle of the shoulder blade (scapula) laterally and upwards – see Figure 1.
In anatomical terminology, a lateral movement is one that moves part of the body further from (lateral to) the midline of the body.
The key muscles involved in this movement are the middle and lower fibres of the trapezius, and the lower fibres of the serratus anterior.
